The group of scientists from the National Academy of Sinica and the National Taiwan University first worked in detail as Koronavirus 229E (HCOV-229E), opened in 1965, infected human cells. The study was published scientifically magazine Nature Communication (Natcoms).
The HCOV-229E was the first of the seven famous coronavirus that could infected people. It causes symptoms similar to colds: headache, nasal discharge and sore throat. Despite a relatively slight current, this virus is usually found at the same time as a respiratory syncitic virus (RSV), which is often a serious threat to newborns.
Experts using advanced technologies such as cryogyelectronic microscopy (Krio-EM) and mass spectrometry formed an atomic model of an interaction of a viral protein chip protein with a person receptor.
Scientists examined how the HCOV-229E protein interacted with the human aminopeptidase N (HAPN) used by the virus for penetration into cells. To do this, they used Kriyo-EM, mass spectrometer and Glycoshield information process tool developed in 2024.
Glycoshield allowed researchers to analyze translative modifications of glycosylation – a process in which carbohydrate circuits are added to proteins. These modifications play an important role in the masking of the virus from the immune system.
The study showed that the HCOV-229E protein over time increases glycocylation, which helps to prevent the virus’s immune response. This mechanism, known as glycan protection, is also observed in the flu virus and plays an important role in the development of vaccines.
The data obtained can help develop new strategies to combat coronaviruses and other pathogens.
Early in China To create A new coronavirus that can infect people.
