American scientists from the University of California in Berkeley developed a wearable robot gadget that helps people with spinal cord injury to improve the grip function. The device is designed for those who maintain the ability to remove the wrist but lose the opportunity to bend their fingers. The results of the study were published there magazine IEEE operations Oneral Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering.
The device, called Dorsal Grasper (“Refund”), uses additional robotic fingers in the hands of a person. When the user extends the wrist, the device is activated and helps to capture objects. This allows people to receive relatively large and heavy objects without turning the body, which is important for wheelchair users.
During the test, the participants were able to easily capture objects using dorsal clutch. The device did not interfere with natural movements and intuitive control allowed users to quickly adapt.
The team is working on a wireless version of the device, which will be more suitable for use at home. Engineers also improve the strength of the structure so that the background of the back can withstand the loads in real conditions.
