Australian scientists from Edith Cowan University have discovered a link between a person’s physical fitness and their chances of surviving cancer. The results of the research were published in the scientific journal broadcasting British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM).
The team analyzed data from approximately 47 thousand patients with various forms and stages of cancer.
It was revealed that muscle strength and cardiorespiratory endurance significantly reduce the risk of death from any cause in cancer patients.
People who were physically strong and fit had a 31% to 46% higher survival rate after cancer diagnosis compared to patients with weak muscles and low endurance.
The protective effect of physical fitness persisted even in stage 3 or 4 cancer patients, reducing the risk of death from any cause by 8% to 46%.
“The results suggest that muscle strength can potentially be used in clinical practice to determine the risk of death in advanced cancer patients, and therefore muscle strengthening exercises can be used to increase life expectancy,” the researchers emphasized.
