Excess weight has long exceeded the level of an aesthetic defect and has become a truly socially significant problem for many countries in the world. More than 1 billion people suffer from obesity, according to the latest WHO data, Bariatric surgeon Ph.D. at SM-Clinic told socialbites.ca. Vladislav Davydov.
According to the expert, the roots of the problem of excess weight are deep. Obesity is not only unhealthy eating behavior but also a mental restructuring of consciousness. Many overweight people often “eat” stress, depression, problems in the family or at work. The unhealthy habit of constantly eating something (in violation of all nutritional norms) becomes an integral part of life. And the person can no longer see the difference between normal nutrition and overeating.
“Excess body weight significantly affects the functioning of all vital organs, from the cardiovascular and digestive systems to hormonal levels. Deep-rooted processes in our body gradually deteriorate. Abuse of wrong foods increases the level of “bad” cholesterol, which accumulates in the form of fatty plaques on the walls of blood vessels, and this is a direct threat of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. Frequent overeating changes eating behavior and the metabolism of all substances, including insulin production. We know that high levels of this hormone are associated with risks of diabetes, which affects many obese people. We should also not forget the risks of oncology. Breast and ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer; “All these cancers are caused by hormonal changes and fat deposits in the body,” said the bariatric surgeon.
Reproductive disorders in young women and overweight men are a problem that deserves special attention. Davydov emphasized that obese women are almost 5 times more likely to suffer from infertility, and in pregnant women with obesity, the risks of dangerous complications for both the mother and the fetus increase significantly, up to the danger of miscarriage. Obese men have no less problems. Almost 40% of them suffer from sexual disorders associated with hormonal imbalance and erectile dysfunction.
Moreover, people with morbid obesity (extremely overweight) are at risk of excessive stress on the joints, which means irreversible deformation of the spine and limbs and, as a result, human disability.
Trying to somehow solve the problem on their own, many overweight people resort to all kinds of diets. Sometimes the patient can lose weight, but often the lost weight returns and the patient has to start all over again.
As the doctor noted, there are no magic pills available today that can help patients lose weight quickly without any health problems.
Therefore, according to the bariatric surgeon, there is currently no more effective and proven way to radically lose weight than bariatric surgery (SLEEVE gastrectomy or mini-bypass surgery).
“Based on my personal experience and the practice of my colleagues, I will say that on average 70 to 90% of the patients we work with lose excess weight, and I think this is an excellent result. In addition to excess weight, patients also get rid of accompanying diseases such as diabetes or sleep apnea, which is, of course, very valuable. But the main thing is that after such an operation, when the volume of the stomach and therefore the amount of food decreases, it is much easier to form correct eating behavior and abandon the usual eating pattern forever. This is a very important step towards maintaining normal weight and maintaining health,” Davydov emphasized.
