Doctors from the emergency department of Merit Helt Wesley Hospital in the US have reported the first known case of aortic dissection during orgasm in a 45-year-old woman. Health report published American Journal Case Report.
The 45-year-old Mississippi woman, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized with complaints of excruciating stabbing pain, nausea and difficulty breathing, a 10 out of 10. During sexual contact with her husband, in the supine position, with her legs pressed to her chest, the patient felt a “explosion” in her chest spreading backwards during orgasm.
Doctors measured the woman’s frightening blood pressure of 220/140 mmHg and sent her for chest CT angiography. The study showed an intramural hematoma in the woman’s aorta, one of the variants of aortic dissection. In the emergency room, intravenous antihypertensive drugs were started immediately, which were later replaced with oral drugs. He was given morphine and fentanyl to relieve his pain and did not require surgery. Three days later, the woman was discharged from the hospital.
The patient had a history of arterial hypertension. He had previously taken unspecified oral medications but quit more than a year ago. The woman had over 17 years of smoking experience and was smoking 6-7 cigarettes a day at the time of her admission to the hospital.
Acute aortic syndrome (ASS) includes many life-threatening disorders of the aorta. If left untreated, they cause rapid death in 40% of patients. Men have a higher chance of developing OSA, especially after age 65. Previously, cases of intramural hematoma of the aorta during intercourse have not been described.
