American scientists from the University of California, San Francisco studied how sufficient daily water consumption affects human health. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine JAMA Network Open.
“The evidence for such a common and simple intervention was not clear and its benefits were not clearly established, so we wanted to look at these in more detail,” said senior author Professor Benjamin Breuer.
Experts analyzed the results of 18 randomized controlled studies on systematic drinking of water.
The results showed that drinking eight glasses, or two liters, of water a day significantly reduced the likelihood of developing kidney stones. About six glasses or 1.5 liters of water a day contributes to weight loss.
Scientists also found that drinking more than two liters of water per day had no benefit compared to stated doses.
Experts have also determined that getting enough water in your diet can help prevent migraines, control diabetes and low blood pressure, and prevent urinary tract infections.
Adults with recurring headaches felt better after drinking more water for three months. Drinking about four extra glasses of water a day helped diabetics with high blood sugar levels.
The authors suggest that encouraging people to drink water before meals would be a simple, low-cost intervention that could yield major benefits given the prevalence of obesity.
