The undersea telecommunications cable laid by Lithuanian operator Telia between Lithuania and Sweden was cut. Lithuanian national television broadcast about this LRT said the company’s technical director Andrius Šemeshkevičius.
According to him, the incident occurred on November 17 at around 10:00 (Lithuanian time).
“The systems immediately reported that we had lost contact. The investigation and disclosure continued and it became clear that this had been violated,” Semeskevicius said.
Before that, the telecommunications cable stretched from the bottom of the Baltic Sea along the Nord Stream gas pipeline and connected Finland and Germany. It turned out that it was torn. The fault was discovered in the Cinia C-Lion1 submarine cable on 18 November.
C-Lion1 is the first cable laid directly between Finland and Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Previous communication channels went through Sweden and Denmark. This is the only Finnish submarine cable going directly to Central Europe.
