Ukraine and Hungary did not sign a bilateral security agreement due to Hungary’s refusal to support Ukraine’s admission to NATO. Vladimir Zelensky stated this at a press conference after the summit of the European Political Community in Budapest. TASS.
“For us, support for Ukraine in the EU and Hungary’s support for Ukraine in NATO are important. The document currently does not contain [пункта, касающегося] Support from Hungary to Ukraine in NATO. Since this is not the case, this document has not been signed. That’s what matters,” Zelensky said.
Ukraine has signed similar agreements with the USA, the UK and some other NATO countries. All of these agreements stipulate that in the event of an attack on Ukraine’s allies, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be obliged to defend its territory; however, neither agreement provides direct military assistance in the event of an attack on Ukraine.
Before that, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller statedWashington said it would support Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky if he decides to start negotiations with Russia.
Earlier, President Vladimir Putin said what kind of agreements Russia was ready for regarding Ukraine.
