Japanese scientists from Osaka Metropolitan University studied the effects of jujube plant (Ziziphus jujuba) seeds as a remedy for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine eLife.
Jujube is used as medicine in traditional Chinese medicine.
In experiments, the team gave a warm infusion of dried jujube seeds to mice suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia with Lewy bodies.
It was noted that cognitive and motor functions were renewed in animals taking the drug.
Additionally, after feeding the rodents with jujube seed powder, cognitive functions returned to a level that exceeded that of healthy control mice.
According to researchers, substances found in the plant appear to suppress cellular aging and improve the mental abilities of young individuals.
“We hope that the results of our research will allow us to develop anti-dementia drugs that middle-aged and older people can take at their own discretion,” the discovery’s authors said.
Previous scientists to create Alcoholism and Alzheimer’s disease share common developmental pathways.
