A group of Israeli scientists from the Kinneret Limnology Laboratory and the Volcani Institute have proposed a scientific explanation for one of the miracles of Jesus Christ described in the biblical texts. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Water Resources Research (WRR).
According to the New Testament, Jesus Christ miraculously turned a few fish into many fish to feed a large number of people. This event is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of John.
The team explored the depths of Lake Kinneret, also known as the Sea of Tiberias or the Sea of Galilee. The reservoir is mentioned by the second name in the Bible.
The work involved sending out temperature sensors and devices to measure oxygen levels in the lake water, as well as checking wind speed and direction.
Scientists found that at times strong winds draw oxygen from the depths of the Kinneret, causing large numbers of fish to rise to the surface. Lack of oxygen causes the death of aquatic organisms, making it easier for them to be removed from the water.
Researchers note that Lake Kinneret has a natural stratification; It has a cold lower level with low oxygen content and an upper, warmer, oxygen-rich layer where fish live.
They found that thermal stratification occasionally occurs when water from two levels mix, resulting in too little oxygen for fish to survive at any given lake level.
The scientific team also found that the fish species most abundant in the lake during extinction events tended to be found along the shore, where they could be easily picked up by hungry populations.
According to scientists, similar events may have occurred in the lake during the time of Jesus Christ.
Previous researchers revived Extinct Bible tree from a 1000-year-old seed.
