Canadian scientists from the University of Toronto found that concussion significantly increases the likelihood of serious mental disorders after birth. The study was published in the scientific journal broadcasting Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (JCP).
Experts examined data from more than 750 thousand women who gave birth in Ontario, Canada, from 2007 to 2017, tracking women’s mental health indicators for 14 years after birth.
It turned out that 11 percent of mothers with a history of concussion suffered from serious mental illness that occurred after the birth of the child. 7% of women without concussions developed similar problems.
Scientists concluded that concussion increases the risk of serious mental disorders by 25%.
“Weaker cognitive functions, increased sensitivity to light and noise, and the stress of caring for a newborn can increase concussion symptoms, which can increase the risk of mental health problems over time,” the researchers said.
