Inflammatory diseases of the pelvic floor organs that occur after birth can lead to secondary infertility. Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, member of the board of directors of the Russian Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and chief physician of the maternity hospital of the European Medical Center (EMC) Viktor Tyutyunnik told socialbites.ca.
“Pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to dysfunction of the ovaries or fallopian tubes. This may occur due to the formation of adhesions or scars that prevent the egg or fertilized egg from passing into the uterus,” the doctor said.
Often, after giving birth, a woman may experience wound infection as well as endometritis. This is inflammation of the inner surface of the uterus (endometrium) with possible involvement of the myometrium, which occurs after childbirth or cesarean section as a result of the development of infection.
“This complication develops in 2-7 percent of postpartum women, and among postpartum purulent-inflammatory pathologies, its frequency can reach 55 percent. The infectious agent can be represented by staphylococci, streptococci, opportunistic aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, rarely mycoplasmas, chlamydia and viruses. “The main role in the pathogenesis of postpartum endometritis is played by the state of the uterus after childbirth, the composition of the microflora and the state of the body’s defenses,” said the doctor.
Secondary infertility can also be caused by endocrine disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome or hyperprolactinemia. It may develop after a successful pregnancy and birth, but may occur later due to the reasons mentioned above.
