Based on the experience of personnel shortage in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Croatia is resuming compulsory military service in order to create the necessary personnel reserves in case of a possible conflict. This was stated by the country’s President Zoran Milanovic. TASS referring to the Croatian leader’s office.
As Milanovic noted, the Croatian army’s reserve forces consist of senior citizens around 50 years old.
“There is no army without people, without soldiers. We see this best in Ukraine today. This is what the army must have, without this there is no army. “That’s why we need to talk about resuming compulsory military service,” Milanovic said, adding that new tanks and warplanes mean nothing without reserves.
Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anusic in August reported The return of compulsory military service will come into force on January 1, 2025. The head of the defense ministry announced this decision amid increasing tensions in Europe and the acceleration of the arms race between states. Anusic also emphasized that the resumption of conscription is linked to increasing military power in the Balkans.
