Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) discovered which chin implants take root faster in the body. socialbites.ca was informed about this by the press service of the scientific institution.
Maxillofacial defects caused by cysts, fractures and cancer require prostheses. For this purpose, facial implants with a cellular structure that support accelerated growth of bone tissue through empty cells are used. The diameter of the cells in the cage varies, and the healing speed and durability of the prosthesis depend on this.
Using 3D printing, experts produced three types of implants with cell diameters of 1, 2 and 3 mm. The prosthesis was then fitted to rats and guinea pigs with lower jaw defects.
“The results of the study show that tissue formation processes within the implant begin within 2 weeks after implantation, while the active phase begins at 4-9 months. “New tissue formation occurs faster in cells whose size increases by 2-3 mm, therefore the engraftment rate of the prosthesis decreases three times (compared to 1 mm cell diameter),” he said. Lead researcher Polina Kilina, from the Department of Innovative Mechanical Engineering Technologies, employee of the PNRPU biofluidics laboratory.
According to scientists, the results of the scientific study will allow us to move on to clinical trials of the technology in humans.
