Japan acquits longest-serving prisoner on death row

Iwao Hakamada se despertó durante medio siglo preguntándose si almorzaría. El preso que más tiempo pasó en el corredor de la muerte en todo el mundo ha sido absuelto el jueves de las cuatro muertes por las que había sido condenado en 1968. Aquel fibroso treintañero que entró en la cárcel es hoy un anciano senil de 88 años que no ha podido acudir esta mañana al tribunal. Su caso ha sido reivindicado por activistas y abolicionistas durante décadas como el epítome de la crueldad de la pena de muerte en general y de la japonesa en particular.
