According to official data from China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the country’s marriage rate will fall from 13 million in 2013 to less than 7 million in 2022. That’s the lowest number since records began in 1985, it writes CNN.
The country saw a slight increase in marriages last year. There are talks that the population will rise to 8 million, but authorities are concerned about this trend.
The divorce rate has risen sharply, reaching a record high of 4.7 million in 2019, four times more than two decades ago.
The government has attempted to reverse this process, introducing a new law in 2021 requiring couples to go through a 30-day “cooling off” period before divorcing. This led to a temporary decline, but the divorce rate has since risen again, rising by 25% in 2023 compared to the previous year.
This has exacerbated the demographic crisis facing the world’s second-largest economy, which comes at a time when a slowing economy, a rapidly ageing population and fewer women are having children after decades of one-child policies.
Previously a psychologist explainedwhether the conciliation procedure would help reduce the number of divorces.
