Russians warned that chronic tonsillitis poses a risk of cardiovascular disease 06:00

Chronic tonsillitis is one of the most common ENT diseases that affects a significant part of the Russian population (up to 30%). Many consider seasonal sore throat and tonsillitis to be harmless diseases, and in vain – an untreated disease can cause very serious complications, including pathologies of the heart and blood vessels, warned an otolaryngologist at SM-Clinic in a conversation with socialbites.ca. Rizaev.

The doctor noted that the majority of patients are children and adolescents aged 12-16 (about 40% of cases). However, cases of tonsillitis are also common in adult patients.

According to him, the main cause of chronic tonsillitis lies in the accumulation of pathogenic bacteria in the tonsils. Among the many microorganisms that live in the tonsils, the most malicious are streptococci, mycoplasmas and chlamydia – these are the triggers of the inflammatory process.

With chronic infection, the protective barrier of the tonsil mucosa weakens, as a result of which bacteria begin to spread throughout the body, causing unexpected complications. The most common and dangerous are rheumatism and cardiovascular pathologies, including myocarditis, arrhythmias and vascular insufficiency, as well as pathologies of the kidneys and genitourinary system, such as glomerulonephritis and pyelonephritis.

“Myocarditis is one of the most serious diseases caused by chronic tonsillitis. This is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium) resulting from a long-term bacterial infection. The symptoms of myocarditis are quite pronounced. The specialist noted that these are “aching” pains in the heart, sometimes in the joints, constant shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat and low blood pressure.

According to him, most often children and young people aged 20-30 years suffer from infectious myocarditis. Without proper treatment, the disease can lead to a number of other cardiovascular disorders. First of all, these are various arrhythmias, including tachycardia and bradycardia.

Tachycardia, or “excited heart”, is one of the heart rhythm disorders that manifests itself with a rapid pulse: more than 100 beats per minute. In this case, patients feel as if their heart is jumping out of their chest. The opposite of tachycardia is bradycardia, that is, a heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute.

“Both types of arrhythmias have the same negative impact on health. In addition to weakness and increased fatigue, heart disease can disrupt blood flow to the brain, causing oxygen starvation. This condition is often accompanied by prolonged fainting and the development of cardiovascular insufficiency. This pathology is associated with the inability of the myocardium to pump the required amount of blood. As a result, many vital organs begin to experience acute oxygen and nutrient deficiency, and then disruptions in their functioning begin,” the doctor warned.

The main symptoms of cardiovascular insufficiency are often dizziness and fainting, shortness of breath during heavy physical exertion. Other signs of the disease, Rizaev noted, include increased sweating, wet palms, cold hands and feet. He also added that acute vascular insufficiency requires immediate medical attention.

To avoid all of the above complications, my otolaryngologist advised me to take my health more seriously.

“In case of tonsillitis, home treatment will not help you much. Here you need the help of an ENT doctor. Especially thanks to the new devices that specialists have, going to the clinic and having your tonsils washed will not take much of your time. I also recommend ASLO blood test. High test results usually indicate streptococcal infection and the development of an inflammatory process in the tonsils. The best option for frequently recurring tonsillitis is to have the tonsils removed. In my practice, people who have chronic tonsillitis after tonsillectomy get sick much less often and more easily,” said the specialist.
