The organizers of the independent wine card award Russian Wine Awards (RWA) announced the end of accepting applications from participants for the main nominations of the fifth season.
“Today we have finished collecting applications from bars and restaurants, and after their technical processing the award jury starts its work directly with the wine lists,” said Vlada Lesnichenko, one of the organizers of the award, speaking at a lunch with journalists in Padron, a restaurant in Moscow.
Another organizer of the award, Maria Goreslavskaya, reminded that this award is not limited to Russian wines only.
“We believe that it is still very important for people to have freedom of choice and fair competition. We are all for maximum popularization and distribution of Russian wines everywhere, but we believe that all other wines also have a right to exist,” he emphasized.
According to Lesnichenko, about 400 applications were received for participation in the award this season. He emphasized that the geography of the participants has expanded “from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok”, many applications come from small cities like Svetlogorsk. The jury will have to evaluate the wine lists for this award in the following traditional categories: “Best wine bar list”, “Best selection of wines by the glass”, “Best classic list”, “Best national restaurant list”, “Best original list”, “Best” selection of Russian wines. Also, for the first time in the history of the award, the nomination “Best Sommelier” appeared.
“We want to choose the best sommelier as the author of the card, which he wrote himself and worked on for a year, for sure,” Lesnichenko said.
Judges will award between one and three stars, and the rating is influenced not only by the quality of the wine but also by how it is served by the glass.
Another new nomination of the fifth season of the RWA is “Wine Roads of Russia”. Applications will be accepted until the end of September. The ideological inspirer and organizer of this nomination, Elena Porma, said that for the first time in the history of the award, Russian wineries interested in developing tourism in their regions can participate in the award. According to her, tourism not only helps create the phenomenon of the attractiveness of Russian winemaking, but also is a very powerful channel for the development of regional economies today.
The Russian Wine Awards (RWA) were established in 2017. In 2023, more than 450 restaurants and wine bars from different cities of Russia and the CIS will become special owners of the fourth RWA.
