Remains of soup and broth poured into the sink or toilet can have negative consequences for the operation of sewage systems. The fats and oils they contain can harden on the inner walls of pipes and eventually form blockages along with other food waste, Maria Zolotareva, senior lecturer at the Department of Biotechnology and Industrial Pharmacy at RTU MIREA, told socialbites.ca.
“The resulting blockages and clogs naturally disrupt the permeability of sewer pipes and the accumulated waste can begin to decay. Therefore, it is better to take the remaining oil from the dishes and collect it with a paper towel. If there is excess oil or soup left, you need to drain it into a separate container, close its mouth tightly and throw it in a bucket or garbage container,” he said.
After cooking pasta or potatoes, it is permissible to run hot water into the sink only if the material of the sink pipes and bowl allows it. PVC pipes cannot withstand temperatures above 60 ° C, so boiling water can cause deformation of the corrugated siphon, damage to plastic and even burst pipes. Bowls made of ceramics (sanitary porcelain, sanitary ware), artificial acrylic stone, glass and wood may crack under the influence of hot water. It should be cooled by adding cold water to boiling water or by waiting for it to cool naturally, and then poured into the sink.
Running cold water into the sink while pouring hot water into it can also damage the sink bowl, as some materials cannot withstand sudden temperature changes.
“In this case, it is recommended to pour boiling water into the drain hole in a thin stream, making sure that it does not get on the bottom and walls of the sink. However, if the sink, siphon and sewer pipes are made of stainless steel, cast iron and other metals, boiling water will not harm them. In addition, hot water effectively removes fat deposits on the walls and is indicated for preventing blockages. By following the rules for the maintenance of the sink and sewer system, you can avoid serious problems and extend the life of the equipment,” he concluded.
