Record temperatures and a prolonged drought in Greece have exposed the ruins of the village of Kallio, which was flooded in the late 1970s and formed Lake Mornos, the main reservoir of Athens. This was reported by the Phys.org portal with reference to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.
According to state water operator EYDAP, the lake level has dropped by 30% in recent months. The water has retreated 40 meters, leaving the ruins of houses, schools and churches.
The last time the village of Kallio was out of water was during a severe drought in the early 1990s, journalists learned.
In 2024, Greece experienced its warmest winter and warmest July in history.
Greek authorities have appealed to the 3.7 million residents of Attica, the region around Athens where about a third of the republic’s population lives, not to waste water.
According to local residents, drought conditions at the Mornos reservoir have been ongoing for about two years, during which time very little rain has fallen.
The Greek government noted that the country was spending 85 percent of its water resources on irrigation and needed more dams.
Earlier scientists warned about the occupation of drylands around the world.
