Reducing eye strain, protection from sunlight, eating right, quitting smoking and regular visits to the ophthalmologist help preserve vision in old age, Tatyana Chestnova, an ophthalmologist at the Fomina Clinic network in Sochi, told socialbites.ca.
“Eye exercises are ineffective. The best exercise for your eyes is to take a break and blink. There is a “20-20-20″ rule: while working on the computer, reading a book or practicing with small objects (beads, embroidery, diamond mosaic), every 20 minutes you need to look at an object 20 steps away or more for 20 seconds. During the break, you can also blink 20 times, but do not rub your eyes with your hands, it is not safe,” explained the doctor.
To avoid unnecessary eye strain, you need to work in good light. The ophthalmologist emphasized that prolonged exposure to a dark room has been proven to negatively affect vision.
“It is important to protect your eyes from ultraviolet radiation when outdoors. Wear sunglasses with a UV filter (UV400), hats and wide-brimmed hats. The lens becomes cloudy, including under the influence of UV rays, so sunglasses reduce the risk of cataracts,” Chestnova said.
It is also important to quit smoking: age-related macular degeneration increases the risk of developing cataracts and causes dry eye syndrome. The diet should include brightly colored vegetables and fruits, green and orange are especially good for the eyes. It is necessary to maintain a healthy weight and avoid high blood pressure, as these factors can worsen the condition of the retina.
“Do not swim in the sea or pool wearing soft contact lenses. There is a high risk of developing conjunctivitis or a more serious disease (acanthamoeba keratitis, which lasts a very long time and is difficult to treat). It is also important to avoid eye injuries. Even if you decide to mow the lawn at home, you need to wear protective glasses when working with dangerous tools,” the doctor warned.
People under the age of 40 should see an eye doctor once every two years, and once a year after that age, even if they do not have any vision problems. Early diagnosis of eye diseases can prevent serious problems from developing in the future.
