Taking 15-minute exercise breaks during work can significantly improve your health. A study in the journal Nature found that game elements help make them easier and more engaging Healthcare.
Scientists analysed data from 11,000 employees across 73 companies in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. They found that a 15-minute game-based wellness programme at work led to a significant increase in physical activity levels. 14% of participants reported improved physical fitness, 12% had more energy, 8% had improved general health, 8% had improved sleep and 7% had improved mood.
WHO recommends that people aged 18 to 64 engage in at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity. The average level of daily physical activity increased by 12 minutes per day (85 minutes per week).
“Regular physical activity plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. Since most adults spend most of their waking time at work, workplaces provide an ideal environment to promote physical activity,” the authors explained.
Exercising at work enabled 95% of participants to meet or exceed the recommended physical activity level.
“In this study, we showed that just 15 minutes of physical activity a day can make a big difference to people’s health and well-being. Although participants were only required to commit to 15 minutes of activity, most did more. Ultimately, the programme became a catalyst for increasing physical activity levels, the scientists said.
