Portugal asks EU for help to put out wildfires on remote island 01:20

Portugal has asked the European Union for help to combat massive forest fires on the island of Madeira, an autonomous region in the Atlantic about a thousand kilometers from Lisbon. The agency reports that Lusa.

Two special planes built by Canadair to help fight the fire are expected to be provided through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. They will most likely come from Spain.

Madeira is part of the EU as a Special External Region (the island is closer to Africa than to Europe). A fire broke out there on August 14, covering about 4.5 thousand hectares. The extinguishing is complicated by high temperatures. The police are investigating, suspecting arson as the cause of the disaster.
