Scientists find that humpback whales create and use tools 02:20

American scientists from the University of Hawaii at Manoa have concluded that humpback whales can create and use tools. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Royal Society Open Science (RSOS).

As observations using suction cup sensors and underwater drones have shown, humpback whales living off the coast of Alaska release air bubbles in a special way, creating something like a barrier or a net from them.

By popping bubbles in various ways, the marine mammals control details such as the number of rings, their size and the distance between elements. These structures trap krill, the whales’ main food source.

Scientists found that wearing bubble nets allowed humpback whales to catch seven times more prey in a single feeding dive without expending any extra energy.

Researchers say the discovery sheds light on the whales’ survival patterns and the energy sources that enable them to travel from southeastern Alaska to the Hawaiian Islands during their winter migration.

Earlier scientists I learnedIt has been stated that humpback whales have taken a break from human-induced stress during the Covid-19 outbreak.
