Multiple sclerosis often manifests itself as visual disturbances, numbness in the limbs and tingling, Anna Botina, a neurologist at the Fomin Clinic in Sochi, told socialbites.ca.
“In multiple sclerosis, immune cells attack the myelin sheath of nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms depend on where demyelination occurs. At the beginning of the disease, a completely nonspecific picture can be observed: general weakness and fatigue, unsteadiness when walking, difficulty remembering, dizziness,” Botina said.
The doctor added that the central locus of symptoms is damage to the optic nerve. Disorders in one eye are characteristic: acute deterioration of vision from blurring to blindness, double vision or loss of half of the visual field.
“Numbness, tingling, or crawling sensations in the extremities are common, as is decreased or loss of sensation in the arms, legs, or trunk. There may be weakness in one or more limbs, impaired coordination and balance while walking, and difficulty performing precise movements,” the neurologist noted.
It is important to see a doctor if these symptoms occur. Multiple sclerosis is never diagnosed based on symptoms alone, as the symptoms are so diverse and can be signs of other conditions. A lumbar puncture is necessary to confirm multiple sclerosis.
Earlier scientists I learnedParental smoking is associated with an increased risk of multiple sclerosis in adult children.
