Some medications for anxiety and depression, such as sertraline, aripiprazole and Wellbutrin, can increase sexual desire. Mirapex, which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless legs syndrome, can also increase libido, Dr. Hussein Ahman, a pharmacist at the British company Click2Pharmacy, told the Daily Mail.
The expert explained that sertraline belongs to the class of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are used to treat anxiety, panic disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Although SSRIs are often associated with decreased libido, there is growing evidence that sertraline can cause hypersexuality.
A similar effect can be seen in aripiprazole, which is prescribed to patients with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome. Aripiprazole balances the emotional background by regulating the level of dopamine in the brain.
In 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that aripiprazole may cause impulse control problems and cause compulsive or uncontrollable urges to gamble or engage in sexual activity. Wellbutrin, which also affects dopamine, can also increase libido.
According to Ahman, hypersexuality can occur in patients taking Mirapex to treat Parkinson’s disease or restless legs syndrome. A 2007 study published in the journal Psychiatry also reported a link between use of the drug and compulsive masturbation.
