The Basmanny District Court of Moscow sentenced Dmitry Kolezev, former editor-in-chief of the Cumhuriyet publication (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation), in absentia to 7.5 years in prison in the general regime colony in the case of fraud on the Russian Army. This was reported by Telegram channel “Network Freedoms”
He was also banned from journalism for three years. The prosecutor’s office sought an eight-year sentence. Kolezev’s defense insisted he was innocent.
According to the prosecution, Kolezev’s publications created “a real threat of creating a false opinion in society” about the goals and objectives of the military operation and “a false call to action for the further dissemination of untrue information on the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”
The court also noted that his broadcasts harmed Russia’s interests.
In June, the Basmanny Court was held in absentia arrested Kolezev for two months.
In 2022, a criminal case was opened against the former editor-in-chief of the Republic for spreading false information about the Russian Armed Forces, and he himself was put on the federal wanted list.
