Approximately 30% of strokes are caused by carotid artery occlusion, and various symptoms can indicate this serious problem. Boris Rudenko, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Scandinavian Health Center, explained the details of the pathology in an interview “Lente.ru”.
Many people ignore symptoms such as forgetfulness, poor sleep and mild dizziness, but these could be signs of problems with the carotid artery, Rudenko says.
“When the atherosclerotic plaque gradually grows and completely blocks the carotid artery, blood flow to the brain is restored. Bypass blood circulation occurs and brain cells adapt to new conditions,” the doctor explained. They added that this can manifest itself in the form of mild memory impairment, reduced reaction time and performance.
Rudenko also told about a recent case at the Scandinavian Health Center: A patient came to him with high blood pressure and diabetes.
In September 2023, he suffered a mini-stroke, and a few months later, the blood flow in his left carotid artery was completely blocked. In 2024, surgery was not allowed in one of the large medical institutions in Moscow due to late diagnosis.
In July 2024, Rudenko had a stent placed in the carotid artery to restore normal blood flow. The operation was performed under local anesthesia, the patient was conscious and able to communicate with the surgeon, and was discharged the next day.
