Scientists from Gachon University in South Korea discovered that drinking water from plastic bottles can cause blood pressure to increase. Research results published In the journal Microplastics.
Sixty adults participated in the three-month study. They were divided into two groups. The first group drank water from plastic bottles, and the second group drank water from glass bottles. Before and after the experiment, scientists recorded the subjects’ blood pressure measurements.
The results showed that the average systolic pressure level (the highest reading on the tonometer) increased by 1.68 mmHg in individuals who drank water from plastic bottles. There was no change in those who drank water from glass containers. The researchers found that participants who used plastic bottles had more microplastics in their blood. It is assumed that this is what may be causing the increase in pressure.
However, experts advise caution when interpreting the results. They state that the increase in pressure is insignificant and within normal limits. In addition, the sample size of the study was small and the experimental period was not very long. However, scientists recommended avoiding drinking water from plastic bottles and preferring glass or metal containers.
