A person’s appearance can adapt to their name over the years, as shown in a study published in the journal Nature. PNAS.
Hundreds of volunteers participated in the experiments. They were shown photographs of people and asked to choose the appropriate name from a variety of options. They guessed the name correctly most of the time, but mostly for photographs of adults.
Scientists then used machine learning to analyze photos of people and found that the names were often similar in appearance, but only in adults.
This data suggests that a person’s physical appearance can match their name. As a result, people with the same name often share common facial features. To confirm this, scientists “aged” photos of children. The resulting images were mixed with photos of real adults and shown to volunteers. They correctly guessed the names of adults more often from real photos than from artificially aged ones.
Scientists also analyzed photos of older children using machine learning, finding that they had fewer facial features in common than real adults.
“It appears that people’s faces can change over time in accordance with cultural expectations regarding their names,” the authors concluded.
