A man in Italy coughed so hard he broke his rib, writes Daily mail.
According to media reports, the injured man, 54, from Italy, was a heavy smoker and had been in an accident several years ago, suffering chest trauma. This caused him to develop a chronic cough. After another attack, the Italian went to hospital complaining of severe chest pain.
The scan showed that the patient’s rib was broken. Doctors believe that this happened due to a strong cough; moreover, the man himself assures that he was not injured. Due to the victim’s constant coughing, the fracture could not heal on its own.
Surgeons operated on the patient and his condition improved thereafter.
“The pain disappeared immediately after the surgery. The doctors discharged the patient after 24 hours,” he said.
The man was also found to be deficient in vitamin D, which can weaken bones and lead to osteoporosis, increasing the risk of serious fractures.
Doctors had previously mistaken a piece of pepper for a tumor, which turned out to be the man’s I have been coughing for two years.
