An unmanned, reusable spacecraft developed in China could be used for military purposes, the agency reports Reuters.
“It obviously has military applications, including, for example, comprehensive inspection of enemy targets or disabling them,” Marco Langbroek, a lecturer in optical space situational awareness at Delft University of Technology, told the agency.
Among the non-military applications of space drones, Langbroek mentioned satellite refueling.
In May 2023, a Chinese unmanned, reusable spacecraft returned safely to Earth after spending 276 days in orbit around the planet. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation described the event as “a breakthrough.”
According to some observers, the Chinese device could carry surveillance and filming equipment to collect intelligence data, the South China Morning Post wrote. Journalists noted that China has been competing with the United States in the creation of a small unmanned, reusable spacecraft since 2011. Some experts believe that the Chinese project could be similar to the American Boeing X-37 orbiter.
