Every year on July 22, Orthodox believers celebrate the day of remembrance of the holy martyrs Pankratius of Tauromenia and Cyril of Gortyn. This is reported by OTR.
On this day in Russia, Yagodnik is also celebrated, because by the end of July, blueberries are fully ripe in the forests. The channel told what traditions our ancestors observed when celebrating Yagodnik.
Hieromartyr Pancratius lived, according to legend, at the time of Jesus Christ. He became a hermit in the Pontic Mountains. Pancratius spread Christianity in Tauromenia, Sicily, where the pagans disliked him and stoned him to death. The saint’s relics are kept in a temple in Rome.
Saint Cyril lived in the 3rd century and continued to preach his faith despite the persecution of Christians. Torture and execution did not break his faith and many became Christians after seeing his perseverance.
In Russia, blueberries and the first cucumbers were collected on this day. Unmarried girls believed that by collecting a certain number of berries and saying special words, they could wish for a future betrothed. Rituals were also performed for a successful harvest and prosperity.
On Yagodnik it was recommended to work in the garden, spend time without quarreling with loved ones, take care of yourself and pick blueberries. It was forbidden to shout, start new things, use foul language, argue with relatives.
Patriarch Kirill before statedThe popularization of sin in cinema and literature has “blown off the roof.”
