Dutch scientists from Utrecht University have uncovered one of the causes of feline kleptomania: the tendency of domestic cats to steal random objects and bring them home. This was reported by newspaper Guard.
During the study, biologists studied the behavior of some domestic animals from around the world. Some of the favorites committed up to 100 thefts per month.
For example, Charlie the cat from Bristol, United Kingdom, returns from walks with plastic toys, clothespins, a rubber ducky, cups, cutlery and other objects.
Another cat named Dusty from San Mateo, California, USA, has committed more than 600 thefts. In one night, he brought home 11 items that did not belong to him, including Crocs, a baseball cap and a pair of swimsuits.
Texas cat Cleo became famous on social media for stealing computer mice.
After analyzing known cases, scientists have identified several factors that drive pets to steal. Since cats have small stomachs, they tend to hide their prey in their own territory. The same instinct can also cause them to bring inedible items home.
Cats are also attracted to certain wool and plastic items because they contain lanolin, a type of animal wax.
The researchers noted that cats do not steal items as gifts for their owners, but do so solely for their own benefit.
