An international team of scientists from Australia, Iran and the US studied the impact of social networks on the content of people’s frightening dreams. Experts found that online platforms are increasingly intertwined with nightmares and have become a separate subject of disturbing dreams. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine BMC Psychology (BMCP).
The team surveyed 595 adult social media users in Iran, asking them to answer questions about the frequency and content of nightmares.
To assess anxiety levels, the researchers used the anxiety subscale of the Brief Symptom Questionnaire, in which participants rated how much they had been bothered by nervousness over the past seven days.
The study found that nightmares related to social media were not very common, but were more commonly reported by people who had deeply integrated online platforms into their daily lives.
The most common bad dream scenario involved not being able to log in to social media and subsequent breakups with other users. Less common nightmares included sexual harassment or online identity theft.
Social media-related nightmares were significantly associated with increased anxiety levels, decreased peace of mind, and poor sleep quality.
According to researchers, as artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies develop and integrate into society, media content will increasingly penetrate deeper into humanity’s imagination.
Earlier scientists I learned the reason for the increased interest of viewers in natural disaster broadcasts on social networks.
