At least 107 people were killed in a stampede during a religious event in the city of Hathras in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The publication writes about this Hindustan TimesReferring to the state police.
One survivor said the stampede occurred after everyone started leaving the venue after the event ended.
“There was no exit, everyone fell on top of each other, a stampede started. When I tried to get out, motorbikes parked outside were blocking my way. Many lost consciousness and others died,” said an eyewitness who was taken to a nearby hospital.
Documents say most of those killed were women.
The exact cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
