Elenolic acid from olives helped lower blood sugar and promote weight loss in diabetic and obese mice. This was reported by American Society of Nutrition (ASN).
Scientists began their work by looking for natural substances that affect the hormones GLP-1 and PYY. The latter promote satiety and prevent overeating. Its actions are mimicked by the drugs Liruglutide, Ozempic and others.
Laboratory mice were given elenolic acid orally. After one week, the obese animals lost weight and had lower blood sugar levels than animals not given the substance. The effectiveness of the acid was better than metformin, a popular drug for type 2 diabetes. The effectiveness of elenolic acid is comparable to liraglutide.
Elenolic acid significantly reduced food intake and promoted weight loss. According to the researchers, the concentration of this substance in olive oil or olives is too low to cause the effects observed in these products. The scientists’ results could form the basis of more accessible and safe alternatives to Ozempic.
