The Court of Criminal Appeals in Texas found American Kerry Cook not guilty after nearly 20 years awaiting the death penalty and trying to prove his innocence in a murder committed 47 years ago. This was reported by CNN.
A man was convicted of raping and murdering his 21-year-old neighbor Linda Edwards in 1977. He was sentenced to death in 1979, but the sentence was later overturned. In 1992, the jury could not reach a unanimous decision. In 1994, Kerry Cook was sentenced to death again.
The American made a deal with the investigation in 1999 and was released, taking into account the 20 years he spent in prison.
This week, a Texas court found Cook, 68, not guilty because of false testimony and misinterpretation of evidence on which prosecutors based their case.
