Greek archaeologists discovered a mysterious ancient structure resembling a labyrinth on the island of Crete. This situation was officially reported Web site Greek Ministry of Culture (YPPO).
The discovered complex, approximately 50 meters in diameter, consists of eight concentric stone rings with compartments that form small rooms. The building was discovered during excavations during the construction of the airport’s radar tower.
Located at the top of a hill near the town of Kastelli, the ancient structure appears to have two main areas: a circular building with a diameter of 15 meters in the middle and a zone of walls surrounding it.
Based on the style of pottery shards discovered during excavations, scholars have tentatively dated the building to 2000-1700 BC. This period dates back to the Minoan civilization.
Scientists noted the similarity of the building with the labyrinth of the Cretan king Minos, described in ancient Greek myths. According to legend, a minotaur lived in the labyrinth – a monster with a human body and a bull’s head.
Experts noted that the “labyrinth” near Castelli was most likely used for ritual feasts involving large amounts of food, wine and other treats. The large number of animal bones found in the excavation area prove this.
