Dr. Stuart Fisher and Family Physician Neha Vyas (both from the USA) said The Daily Mail noted that the most common causes of fatigue include stress, anemia, thyroid dysfunction, mental health problems and diabetes.
Dr. Vyas explained that one possible cause of constant fatigue could be a lack of healthy red blood cells (RBCs) in the body. This condition is called anemia. Erythrocytes are red blood cells that carry the hemoglobin protein to organs and tissues and are responsible for the metabolic processes of tissues and organs. Depending on the degree of decrease in red blood cell and/or hemoglobin levels, anemia may be mild, moderate, or severe.
Anemia can be caused not only by low dietary iron but also by various diseases that lead to loss of red blood cells. In addition, such a pathology can manifest itself for physiological reasons, for example, due to heavy bleeding during menstruation in women.
Thyroid dysfunction is also one of the main causes of lethargy and apathy. Dr. Fisher explained that the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism (the rate at which the body uses energy). When an organ produces too much or too little of certain hormones, a person’s health can suffer.
Experts added that stress and mental health issues can cause lethargy, fatigue and fatigue. According to doctors, when under stress, the body produces excess cortisol and adrenaline, which accelerates the heart rate and sends large amounts of blood to the muscles. However, biologically such a complex state cannot be maintained for too long – during “recovery” the amount of energy drops sharply.
Some mental disorders (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and others) are accompanied by a chemical imbalance of certain substances in the brain called neurotransmitters. In this case, the person may feel apathy. Fisher explained that such psychological fatigue is eliminated by drugs that restore the balance of neurotransmitters.
