Eight Przewalski’s wild horses were released into nature for the first time in the last 200 years as part of the “Return of Wild Horses” project in Kazakhstan. This situation was officially reported portal Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan (GOV.KZ).
As the Forestry Committee of the state’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources clarified, the Altyn Dala nature reserve in the Kostanay region in the north of the country has become the animals’ new home.
Przewalski’s horse, the only wild species in the world, came from Prague Zoo in the Czech Republic. The project plans to send a total of 40 people back to the Kazakhstan steppes over the next five years.
According to the initiative, wild horses will help increase nature’s biodiversity by promoting pollination in plants and fertilizing the soil with manure.
Kazakhstan is considered to be the place where man first domesticated the horse. This happened about 5.5 thousand years ago – almost 2 thousand years before the first mention of the domestication of horses in Europe.
