Scientists from the University of South Australia found that almonds may reduce appetite and improve cardiometabolic health. Results of the study: shared In the scientific journal Obesity.
More than a hundred overweight and obese volunteers aged 25 to 65 participated in the study. They were divided into two groups. Both groups followed the full diet for nine months. The subjects followed a low-calorie diet for the first three months and followed a diet to maintain the weight they had achieved for the next six months. Participants in the first group ate high-carb rice crackers or muesli as a snack, while volunteers in the second group ate almonds.
According to the experimental results, both types of snacks caused a decrease in participants’ weight by approximately 9.3% compared to baseline. However, those who consumed almonds as a snack were found to have better cardiometabolic health. Cardiometabolic diseases include diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity.
It was also noted that participants who consumed almonds felt fuller throughout the diet. Most likely, the decrease in appetite was due to the large amount of healthy unsaturated fat in nuts.
