Psychologist says rapid weight loss attempts threaten depression and eating disorders 04:00

On the eve of summer, pharmacies report an incredible demand for weight loss products, and as the beach season approaches, girls make more restrictive choices without thinking about the harm to mental and physical health. Clinical and business psychologist Stanislav Sambursky told socialbites.ca about the dangers of wanting to lose weight at any cost.

“Numerous studies have shown that trans fats, highly processed foods and excessive sugar consumption lead to mental health problems. In the first place, there is depression, and it is quite difficult to get rid of it without the help of a specialist.

It is important to understand that there is a direct relationship between the brain and the gut.

“Various healthy foods lead to the production of serotonin and other neurotransmitters that affect cognitive performance and mental health. Rejection of harmful foods provides discipline, improves health and, as a result, does not force you to diet,” added the expert.

Many people know the Mediterranean diet, but it is difficult to call it that way. This just represents the typical diet of people in Southern European countries: poultry, fish, seafood, grains, dairy products, lots of vegetables and fruits. As a result, the gut-brain circuit operates in ideal mode.

“On the contrary, monotonous, high-calorie foods increase anxiety levels,” explained the expert.

Additionally, boring, monotonous jobs contribute to obesity, especially when the brain is minimally involved in the activity. There are no positive emotions in a boring routine. As a result, a person gets dopamine from delicious but unhealthy foods. Short-term joys come back to haunt you along with excess weight.

“Endless snacks are a strong signal that it is time to consider a horizontal move within the company or a global change in activities. The person who is passionate about his job and its processes does not need to be bored. “He just doesn’t have it,” the psychologist said.

After annual reports and winter mindless eating, stress, boredom and problems, a strict diet remains the “only” way to get back to normal. Numerous reviews and recommendations of authors promise excellent results in a short time. But few diet pill salesmen talk about the mental consequences. The most important of these is the eating disorder. To achieve the ideal weight, you may develop neurosis or reach the state of anorexia nervosa.

“Any diet deals a sharp blow to eating habits and mood. Body and soul suffer from changes in nutrition. Tasteless, ugly food spoils the mood, leads to apathy, causes chronic fatigue and depression. Sambursky stated that the situation gets worse if the person already had psychological problems before starting the diet.

Being in professional burnout and switching on “lose weight in 30 days” mode can almost guarantee emotional breakdowns.

“Monotonous diets impoverish the body and inhibit vital processes. Many diets advocate total avoidance of sugar, even in the form of dark chocolate and fruits with high sucrose content. Weight decreases, but the risk of developing cardiodystrophy – malnutrition of the heart muscle – increases. “The salt and sugar taboo leads to a decrease in neuroconductivity,” he warned.

With prolonged depression, a person’s perception of taste changes: all food becomes tasteless, once favorite delicacies turn into tasteless pulp. As a result, the person eats more than before in order to feel full in some way.

“Women fall victim to diet-related depression more often than men. Symptoms are: anxiety, constant tension, dissatisfaction, aggression. The joy of a slender figure, burdened with mental symptoms, will not be complete. The risk of breaking down and accumulating even more kilograms increases. Physical and mental health is an active lifestyle, a variety of foods and healthy habits. “These will not lead to a situation that will cause you to diet together,” the psychologist said.
