Australian scientists from Curtin University in Perth have discovered that photographing and posting food can help people balance their diets. The research was published in the scientific journal broadcasting American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN).
In the experiment, participants compared different ways to remember what they had eaten in the last 24 hours. One of the methods was to take photos of the meals taken using the Food Record mobile application. Another group tried to remember what they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All collected data was then analyzed by a nutritionist.
The study found that the accuracy of food intake data was much higher for the group that took photos of what they ate, compared to participants who were asked to remember what they ate.
According to the team, photographing their diet allowed them to quickly and relatively accurately assess the nutritional value of foods. In the future, the expert plans to develop an artificial intelligence tool that will monitor nutrition and make recommendations for improvement if necessary.
