Some people believe that cold dairy products can cause a sore throat. But as Niyaz Mukhamadyarov, an otolaryngologist at the SberZdorovye medical company, told socialbites.ca, the pathogens of the disease are not transmitted by milk, but a cold drink can create conditions for the development of the disease.
“Despite the fact that milk, especially fresh milk, may contain pathogens (various viruses, bacteria, fungi that can cause diseases, including sore throats in humans), the probability of such an infection is low and most likely remains only theoretical. The most common consequences of drinking contaminated milk continue to be gastrointestinal symptoms. At the same time, milk sold in stores is made safe by heat treatment. However, any ice-cold drink can create conditions for the development of the inflammatory process, causing vasospasm and thus making it easier for viruses and bacteria to enter the body,” the doctor said.
For example, a liquid stored in the refrigerator cools to a temperature below 10 degrees. As the otolaryngologist explains, when a person drinks a cold drink against the background of a significant temperature drop, the muscles of the pharynx contract sharply, compressing the nerves and blood vessels. In some people, this can cause discomfort and even pain.
“If you want to drink an icy cold drink on a hot day, it’s better to do it slowly, pausing between sips. You should not use a straw; the liquid needs to warm up at least a little in your mouth before entering the throat,” explained the SberHealth doctor.
If you feel discomfort when drinking cold things and want to get rid of them, you can solve this problem by drinking hot drinks or sucking ordinary candies. If the pain does not go away within 2-3 days, you should consult an ear, nose and throat specialist.
