Polyneuropathy is nerve damage that causes pain and numbness in the legs and arms. This can lead to depression, decreased quality of life, falls, infections and limb amputations. A new study has shown that polyneuropathy often goes undetected even in high-risk groups. The results were published in the journal neurology.
169 people from the United States participated in the study (average age 58 years). Half of them had diabetes and 67% of patients had metabolic syndrome. In this case, abdominal obesity (in the belly area) is combined with two or more of the following: high blood pressure, high blood fats, high blood sugar, or high cholesterol.
Tests revealed polyneuropathy in 73% of patients; a quarter of them were unaware of their diagnosis and almost 60% complained of pain. In this study, the risk of polyneuropathy was more than fourfold in people with metabolic syndrome.
Polyneuropathy can be caused by diabetes, autoimmune diseases, trauma, and cancer treatment.
“The number of people with neuropathy in the study, especially those with undiagnosed neuropathy, was extremely high – almost three-quarters of the study group. This highlights the urgent need to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this condition, as well as the need to control risk factors that can lead to the disease.” ” the authors stated.
