First industrial sand cell produced in Finland

The development of the Finnish company Polar Night Energy is able to store energy from renewable sources for up to several months. The developers told the post about the process of creating a battery BBC.

There is 100 tons of construction sand in the high tank. The sand cell works on the principle of resistive heating – a process in which thermal energy is produced by passing an electric current through a special conductor. In this case, the air is heated and then directed to the sand through the channels of the heat exchanger. The high melting point of sand is an advantage of this material, thanks to the large energy storage potential of the sand cell. In addition, such an energy source is cheaper than its lithium and cobalt counterparts.

Today, Polar Night Energy’s invention powers the local heating system. According to the creators, the hot air of the heat exchanger can also be used to heat water.
