Spanish archaeologists discovered a rare 1000-year-old sword in the city of Valencia. The artifact was the first sword of its kind, dating back to the Muslim period. The find was reported to official authorities portal Administration of Valencia (ADV).
Since the sword was found in an upright position inside the tomb, the weapon was named “Excalibur” in honor of King Arthur’s legendary sword. According to legend, King Arthur removed Excalibur from the stone.
The 46-centimeter-long Valencian sword was decorated with bronze plates and had notches on the hilt for a secure grip in the hand. According to scientists, the size of the weapon and the absence of a guard (a protective plate between the blade and the hilt) indicate that the sword was used by a mounted warrior.
Although the blade was found in a tomb inside an Islamic-era house, its shape indicated European origin and resembled the shape of swords made by the Visigoths. However, dating showed that the found artifact dates from the 10th century, when Valencia was ruled by Muslims and the city itself was called Balancia.
Previously in Denmark discovered Ancient decoration of a shield with the face of Alexander the Great.
