Swedish archaeologists have managed to discover new artifacts from the Danish ship Gribskhunden, which sank off the Swedish coast in 1495 with hundreds of German mercenaries. Information published in the newspaper Berliner Morgenpost.
The ship was discovered in the 1970s, but only in 2002 were researchers able to accurately determine its origin. It turned out that the ship belonged to the Danish king Johann, who sent a fleet to the Swedish city of Kalmar in 1495. The ship sank as a result of a fire on board.
According to the publication, many of the 150 crew members, including about a hundred German mercenaries, went down with the ship.
Archaeologists Rolf Warming and Johan Rennby from Swedish universities managed to examine the wreck of the ship using 3D and photo technology and discovered well-preserved parts of its wooden protective structure on the seabed. This made it possible to obtain unique data on the structure of ships used to travel to America and India. So the secret of these long-distance ships was revealed.
Experts also discovered a chest containing military equipment that probably belonged to German mercenaries. This chest was probably used to store weapons and other items. The results of the study will be used to initiate a project for the complete reconstruction of the ship.
