St. At the St. Petersburg University of Pediatrics, doctors saved a newborn girl with a large tumor. In this respect reports press service of the medical institution.
St. St. Petersburg doctors discovered pathology in fetal development during the mother’s pregnancy. The woman was observed by gynecologists at the university hospital, and a day after the birth of the child, the newborn required surgery. Neonatal surgeons removed the sacrococcygeal teratoma.
“The main danger of such tumors is that they actively feed on blood and therefore disrupt the child’s systemic blood flow; The heart works under excessive load and may not be able to withstand it. Such formations need to be eliminated without delay,” explained Alexey Podkamenev, head of the department of childhood surgical diseases at the University of Pediatrics.
The tumor, weighing 2 kilograms, was completely removed and the baby is under medical supervision. Doctors are waiting for the results of histological examination to determine whether the tumor is malignant.
Previously Saratov surgeons deleted 10 cm ovarian teratoma in an 8-year-old girl.
